Wedding Photography and Video FAQ's

If you have any questions about our wedding photography or wedding video services we hope you’ll find the answers below, if not drop us a call or message and we’ll be happy to assist.

What is our wedding photography style?

You can expect a mix of reportage shots (photos taken in a documentary style that tell the story of your wedding day), informal group shots taken over the course of the day, a large group shot, portraits of you and your partner enjoying a few quiet moments, and your friends and family celebrating your big day. We like to take a step back and blend into the crowd rather than take over half the day with various set-up shots, and as such gets natural smiles, emotions and authentic moments.

How do we book Jonathan and Essex Wedding Photos?

Reach Jonathan and the team via our contact page and we will get back to you within 24 hours to check availability and make further arrangements. For wedding photos and video, your date will be confirmed with a signed contract and a 20% deposit. The remaining balance is due 1 week before the wedding day.

What happens before the wedding day?

Before the wedding you will get a full consultation as Jonathan ensures he approaches your wedding with your thoughts in mind as well as the technical details and personalised creative ideas. At your wedding you will get a professional photographer (or two) using the best equipment including high end Canon cameras and lenses suited for low light photography and beautifully sharp images. Lighting will be checked, the venue setup, and communication with venue staff such as the catering for timings, the toast-master for announcements, the DJ for special requests (etc) to make sure your day runs smoothly and you get the best results from your photos. You will have his/their full attention for the day making sure every detail is captured from the dress to the décor, to specified shots, guests and moments that mean a lot to the couple. We make a special effort to include those, as well as at least one photo of everyone attending (even those that try and avoid the camera!)

What happens after the wedding day?

After your big day Jonathan and the Essex Wedding Photography team set about transferring and backing up all your photo and video files, once that is done the selection process begins. As with all creatives Jonathan has a strong sense of his own photographic style and also a good understanding of his clients’ needs and so selects the best shots with that in mind. He reviews each image for composition, colour balance, and of course the expressions of everyone in the shot. Your photos will be professionally edited using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom using retouching skills built up over the last 15 years. Once the selections have been made, every photo gets a standard edit (colour correction, cropping, basic retouching.. if needed) then uploaded in batches to your private gallery as they are ready. You will then have the option to choose an album if required.

After all the standard edits are complete Jonathan will then create additional copies with a more artistic edit in a contemporary style such as black and white or a personally stylised version with colour and contrast adjustments. Your photos will then be given to you on a USB, and all versions will be added to your private online storage for you to download and will be securely backed up for 2 years.

Do you photograph non-wedding events?

Absolutely, we photograph (and video) all types of events from birthdays to anniversary’s and other special events. We provide the same high end photography service as we do for weddings.

Can we crate a custom photography or video package?

I can work with you to create a custom package that suits your needs, our packages are flexible and we’re happy to assist.

Is video important for a wedding?

After the wedding day is over, what remains to relive the day aside from the memories are the photos and video. Wedding photographs are beautiful and wonderful but there is nothing that compares to hearing the voices, speeches and kind words that come from family and friends. Video captures the people that matter the most to you and that moment is forever captured on video.

How long does it take to edit the video?

The Cinematic video is completed in 6-8 weeks and the Highlights in 12 weeks.

Where do you live and how far will you travel?

Myself and my wedding team are based in and around Leigh-On-Sea in Essex. We will travel to any location to cover your wedding, we regularly cover weddings around Essex, Kent, and London and have also photographed weddings overseas.

Are you available for overseas weddings?

Yes we are, I love to travel and myself and my team can be at your wedding both around Europe and around the world.

We want to take pictures in a cool location on our wedding day. Will we need a permit?

I would love to be able to help you with this, but the answer is that I can’t be sure. If you’re getting married on the site of the location, the chances that you’ll need a permit are unlikely. If you want to leave your venue and going somewhere else, a permit might be required. There are many places that do require you to get a permit but the permit has to be obtained by the client, not the photographer. If you have a question about a location, just let me know and I will help you figure out if a permit is needed. If we try to shoot in a location that requires a permit, and we don’t have one, we’ll be asked to leave. I don’t want that to happen to us!

When do we get to see the photos?

We’ll send over a section of photos from throughout your wedding day within a week as a preview, and your completed edits will be available in 2-6 weeks, depending on the number of images included in your package.

Do you edit all of our photographs?

Yes, I do! Every image that you receive has been hand-edited, one at a time, without batching in bulk groups or mass-producing the results.

Are our digital files watermarked?

Your edited photos will not be watermarked, so none of the photos your receive will have watermarks on.

Can some of our wedding photos be edited in both black & white and colour?

Yes they can! All images are delivered in black and white AND in colour! This way you can choose between the two yourself.

How many pictures will we receive?

The number of photographs taken depends on many things – the number of guests, hours of coverage, types of events, hours of dancing, and so forth. The average number of photos taken is detailed in each of our packages but those numbers may vary depending on the day itself.

Do we get to keep the negatives?

I provide the selected, edited high-resolution digital files (the digital equivalent of negatives). I do retain the copyright to the images and the right to use them for promotional purposes, competition, professional review, and so on. If you need, I’m glad to provide you with a written release that will allow you to make unlimited personal reproductions and copies for your friends and families.

Do we get the copyright of the images?

Copyright is something that I get asked about often. Many photographers include a “copyright release” in their contracts, which generally just means the same as a release to have your images printed by yourself, or any lab you choose. That’s not the same as obtaining copyright! Copyright simply means that I am the creator of the images, and I “own” the copyright. Selling or obtaining “the copyright” is not possible, but you will have the ability to print and share your images as much as you’d like!

Do we receive the raw, unedited files?

The raw, unedited files aren’t available for viewing or purchase. This is very much like asking your caterer to give you the leftover ingredients used to make your dinner! The images selected for editing and final delivery reflect my very high standards and everything else isn’t archived in the studio. Please rest assured that any images not delivered truly are outtakes! We do not cull to meet a certain number of delivered images, so every viable image is edited carefully and delivered.

Can we see the outtakes and all of the images that didn't make the "final cut"?

The images delivered to you are very loosely edited, taking out only eyes-closed, flash-didn’t-fire, person-walked-in-front-of-the-lens true outtakes. If there are a handful of images of you together with your mum laughing, for example, I’m going to include everything that isn’t an absolute duplicate and so forth. The images not selected aren’t archived and therefore aren’t available.

Can we order prints through you?

Yes we can get high quality prints produced in various sizes and formats.

Do you offer engagement sessions?

Yes, I do! I adore engagement sessions!

What happens if you get ill or can't make it to the wedding?

There is always a backup plan in place even if you don’t see or hear about it. I have an intimate circle of photographers that are at my level if not even more experienced, just as skilled, and has the same style of shooting as I do.

Is Essex Wedding Photos insured?

Yes, Jonathan Owen has public liability insurance in the rare case a situation arise. If required we can provide a certificate of insurance to your venue.
